Culture & Creative Scene
Much too nice to stay only for a little while: the Styrian cultural and creative scene enlivens the city and country throughout the year. No matter whether you are interested in impressive castles, contemporary design, world premiers in the theatre or art exhibitions, in Styria exceptional versatility and the contemporary are skilfully harmonised with each other and side by side.
Trending: the creative side of Styria is above all to be admired in Graz, the culinary capital. Graz was once regarded as a secret literature capital and in 2003 was voted the European Capital of Culture. Graz has been able to bear the title of UNESCO City of Design since 2011 and you immediately see why: the local creative scene is diverse and faces challenges in the field of a wealth of ideas and innovative capacity. Unusual buildings, such as the Kunsthaus Graz [Graz Art Museum], the Murinsel or the Skywalk on the roof of the Kastner & Öhler department store as well as the original shops in the inner city attest to the Graz residents' affinity to object and architectural design.
Time-honoured: architecture in Styria does not just mean the Graz Art Museum, but also cultural heritage in the rural regions. Architectural features such as individual vineyards, castles or culinary establishments enchant the eye there. Some businesses offer architectural and building tours with tastings, which pair wonderfully with an excursion and enjoying culinary delicacies.
Classic: there are also the classics in Styria. Music, literature, theatre and opera sweeten many an evening. The Graz Opera opens its stage for breathtaking performances, which range from musical theatre to ballet. So that many plays show off their innovative side, the Graz National Theatre, for example, guarantees a creative programme ranging from classics to premieres.
